about our education

Admission

There is a system of continuous admission to most courses. This means that a participant can start a course as soon as there is a vacancy. In practice, however, a new group of participants starts about once a month. As regards the hairdressing and auxiliary nursing courses, group admissions apply. This means that all the students on these courses start at the same time. The hairdressing and auxiliary nursing courses usually commence once a year, in the autumn.

Type of study

Courses are conducted on a full-time basis, with a system of self-tuition with teacher support, practical exercises, group and project work. As the courses are aimed at adults, the teaching methods used encourage the participants themselves to take on responsibility for their education. The courses include work placement training.

Individually adapted course plan

An individual course plan is drawn up for each participant. This plan takes into account prior knowledge, work experience, education etc. The length of the course is decided in more detail at this point. The individual course plan consists of various modules. Specialist courses as well as more general courses can be offered.

Branch council – updated courses

Course content, equipment and expertise must, to as great an extent as possible, meet the demands placed by industry. To ensure that all courses are up to date, we hold regular meetings known as branch council meetings.

Location

The courses are conducted at two different locations – Övertorneå and Hedenäset.

In Övertorneå there are courses in IT, business/economics, electrical technology, refrigeration technology, media, metal and ventilation technology, CNC and robot technology, vehicle technology, tourism, restaurant and catering, and auxiliary nursing.

Hedenäset has courses in trades and construction technology and also has a hairdressing course.

Reading and writing difficulties

Teachers at Utbildning Nord have experience of students with dyslexia and reading and writing difficulties. We do everything possible to support these students. As the courses are of a practical nature, teachers will often tutor participants individually.

Language skills

Teaching is conducted in Swedish or Finnish and, to a certain extent, in Norwegian or English. Course literature and other material are in Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian. The literature for IT courses and automation technology is in English. Usually, the Swedes study in Swedish, the Finns in Finnish and the Norwegians in Swedish.

Almost all of the teachers speak both Swedish and Finnish. As many as 95% of the staff at Utbildning Nord are bilingual.

The public employment office assesses the jobseeker’s language skills before making a decision about a course. For instance, if immigrants to Sweden are to cope with the studies, they must have reached the officially approved (SFI) level in Swedish.

Work placement training

All courses include work placement training lasting 4-9 weeks. Work placement training is vocational training on site at a company. Course participants are recommended to do this in their home town to facilitate finding work after completion of their course.

Opportunity to study abroad

It is possible to do work placement training in another Nordic country than the participant’s home country. Since Utbildning Nord is a Nordic education provider, we have a wide network of contacts in the Nordic region. Participants can also travel to other European countries and do four weeks’ work placement via different EU exchange programmes in which we participate. See the link International activity.
