Övertorneå offers a wealth of recreational activities. There are excellent opportunities for taking part in both indoor and outdoor activities
such as hunting, fishing, hiking and other sports. The area has ski slopes, illuminated tracks, sports hall, swimming baths, tennis courts,
golf course, heated outdoor pool, riding school etc. You can also go to the cinema and theatre in Folkets hus. In addition, there are many
possibilities for taking part in study circles. We cooperate with the local educational associations, which can offer courses in languages,
the Swedish hunting examination, dancing etc.
Ylitornio, on the other side of Torneälven in Finland, also has a good range of recreational facilities including swimming baths and sports centres.
Utbildning Nord’s course participants enjoy free entry to the swimming baths and gym both in Övertorneå and Hedenäset. As a course participant, you also have the opportunity to ski free of charge on the Ruskola slope, 3.5 kilometres from Utbildning Nord.
The school has boats, bicycles and kick-sleds that you can borrow. As a course participant, you have access to a car repair workshop in your free time.
Both Övertorneå and Ylitornio have excellent libraries with very helpful staff. Good service is an advantage in a small town. More books are borrowed here in Övertorneå than anywhere else in Sweden. In 2006, people in Övertorneå borrowed an average of 15.4 books each, while the national average was 7.7 books per person.
As a student at Utbildning Nord you can join the participants’ council. The council represents all of the course participants at Utbildning Nord and has the opportunity to influence the conditions of study and to highlight different issues etc. They also organise travel, courses, parties, outdoor days etc. If you would like more information about the council’s activities, contact them via e-mail on KD-Radet(at)students.utbnord.se
On Övertorneå’s and Finnish Ylitornio’s joint website you can find different events in the area.

There are also excellent opportunities for skiing in Aavasaksa, located by the border on the Finnish side of the Torneälven River, five kilometres from Utbildning Nord.
The view from the top of Mount Aavasaksa is renowned. The mountain also has historical significance: in 1736, the Frenchman Jean-Pierre de Maupertuis came to
Aavasaksa to measure the Earth’s circumference.
